Knights of Columbus

Who are the Knights of Columbus?

We are an organization of Catholic men, whose foundation is based on the principles of Unity, as a Catholic lay society; Charity, to those in need; and Fraternitytowards fellow Knights. The principle of Patriotism was later added to reflect the love of one’s Country.

Founded in 1882, by Father Michael McGivney at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT., the Knights of Columbus has become the world’s largest Catholic, family, fraternal organization. We are active in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Guam, Saipan, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Panama and Guatemala.

Today the Knights of Columbus is an organization dedicated to upholding the teaching of the Catholic Church, helping people in need and fostering a bond between members worldwide that has endured for 128 years.

In 2005 Fr. Tim and George Plavcan met and decided it was time to establish a Knights of Columbus Council here at St. Bede’s.

With the help of Veteran Knights like Deacon Bob Ulman, Jerry Briggs, Tom Sadowski and Nace DiNovo the process was begun. Our Council was dedicated on March 14, 2005 and included 56 charter members. Currently, Our Council at St. Bede’s has grown to 80 members strong.

One of the Knights of Columbus’ major functions is to support vocations; this grew out of respect for our founder, in the past several years our Council has given support to Father Ed Suszynski and Father Anthony Suso during their time at the Seminary.

As Knights our faith is very important. We have sponsored the Men’s Retreat, Religious Devotion Night and the 24 hour Rosary for the unborn child.

In the Community we have donated money and volunteered time to Deepwood Foundation, Society for Rehabilitation, Lake County Right to Life, Project Hope, and the Red Cross.

Our Council is involved in supporting many of our Parish’s Ministries, for example, RCIA, Boys and Girl Scouts, the Youth Group, Altar Servers, St. Vincent DePaul, and Handmaids of Mary. We have also been a part of many projects for the Parish including the installation of the flag pole and rewiring of the kitchen in the Father Tulley Center.

We are able to support these groups through our fundraising events such as the Chili Cook-Off, Breakfast with Santa and our Pasta Dinner.

Make no mistake this Council is not just all work and no play – we have also enjoyed wine tasting trips, Captains games, family cook-outs and our annual Christmas Party.

Although we have accomplished a lot since 2005, we still need new members with new ideas to keep our Council growing and vibrant. To become a member you must be 18 years of age, male and a practicing Catholic in good standing. If you are interested or would like more information please contact the Parish Office at 257-5544.
